Our History
The firm was founded by Martin L. Sweeney (1885 - 1960) in the 1940's as a personal injury and labor law practice. In the 1950's, he was joined by his son, Robert E. Sweeney (1924 - 2007), who built upon the foundation his father had created and grew the practice through solid and skillful litigation successes.
Through the firm’s affiliation with labor and injury work, Robert E. Sweeney became aware of the massive increase in lung cancer among construction workers, especially asbestos workers. As a result he was one of the very first lawyers in the country to file an asbestos case, bringing his first asbestos case in the early 1970's. From that time forward, the firm has been one of Ohio’s leading asbestos litigation firms.
Today, the firm continues in this work, led by two grandsons of Martin L. Sweeney, Mark Wintering and Robert P. Sweeney. The practice continues to evolve into new areas of product liability law and beyond with successes on behalf of workers injured through chemical exposures or other unsafe work practices. This work has been concentrated in Ohio, but it has also taken the firm to other states throughout the country, as a consulting firm working with others to achieve a fair and just results for injured people.
